Traditions and folklore reveal the soul of a territory, conveying its history through customs, rituals, and local practices. The municipality of Serravalle Pistoiese preserves a vibrant cultural heritage, celebrated throughout the year with festivals and popular events.
The life of local communities is marked by numerous celebrations, such as the Festa del Sacro Cuore in Ponte di Serravalle (June 2), the Festa di San Rocco in Castellina (August 16), and the festivities dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel (July 16) and Saint Lucia (December 13) in Vinacciano.
In the medieval village of Serravalle Pistoiese, the patronal celebrations of San Lodovico di Tolosa (August 19) are particularly significant. During these days, the village comes alive with musical and folkloric events, including the Palio di San Lodovico, the traditional archery competition among the districts of Serravalle, Masotti, Castellina, and Ponte di Serravalle to win the “cencio” banner. The celebrations culminate with a historical procession accompanying the saint’s statue through the streets of the village, and a fireworks display at the Rocca di Castruccio.
In mid-September, the historic Fiera di Casalguidi takes place, now in its 140th edition. Its origins date back to 1885, when it was a cattle fair, the last market before winter. Today, it features a rich program of stalls and exhibitions, cultural and sporting events, performances, and the traditional Grape Festival, with parades of allegorical floats, music, and folk dances.
Among the most striking events is the Festa Bella, held every three years on Good Friday in Casalguidi, alternating with Quarrata and Montevettolini. This solemn costumed procession reenacts the Passion of Christ, from the Last Supper to Golgotha, retracing the final moments of Christ’s life with remarkable scenic intensity and communal participation.
