Length

A loop route through nature, history, and remembrance in the Montalbano hills. From Casalguidi to the Belvedere Cross, among villages, trails, and breathtaking views.

A loop route that passes through perfect places to admire the beauty of Montalbano‘s nature. We start from the town of Casalguidi, riding along the Montalbano provincial road toward Cantagrillo, passing by the sports area named after the former head coach of the Italian national cycling team, Franco Ballerini, who passed away prematurely in 2010.

Once in Ponte Stella, we cross the entire industrial area and enter the countryside of Serravalle Pistoiese. We will pass a monument dedicated to the memory of Silvano Fedi and his companions Giuseppe Giulietti and Brunello Biagini, at the site where Fedi and Giulietti were killed in a Nazi ambush on July 29, 1944. Silvano Fedi is considered a martyr of the anti-fascist struggle, and his contribution to the partisan war is regarded as highly significant for the liberation of Pistoia.

After one kilometre, we take a dirt road that leads us to the hill of Vinacciano, a small characteristic village, then continue toward Le Ville, passing the quarries of Serravalle. Shortly after, we reach the ridge, where, on the right, we can see the Padule di Fucecchio, the profile of Monsummano Alto, and the Pistoia plain.

Continuing along the ridge, we arrive at the Belvedere Cross, a place of pilgrimage. From there, we descend toward the locality of I Papi and, after some ups and downs, we find ourselves in a beech forest, in the area of Casalvento. Here, we take a short loop among local farmhouses, before enjoying a spectacular downhill ride through the woods that takes us back to Casalguidi.

TAPPA 1

Casalguidi

Casalguidi, fortified in 1181, was contested between the Lombards, Carolingians, and the Counts Guidi. It was destroyed in 1301 by the troops of Corso Donati and again in 1391 by John Hawkwood. It experienced a period of peace in the 15th century. The feuds between the Panciatichi and the Cancellieri ended only with Cosimo I, who subjected it to Serravalle.

Monument to Fedi, Giulietti, and Biagini

This monument is dedicated to Silvano Fedi, Giuseppe Giulietti, and Brunello Biagini, who were killed on July 29, 1944, in a Nazi ambush. It stands at the very site of the attack and was created by Umberto Bovi, funded through a public subscription promoted by the ANPI of Bonelle. Inaugurated on April 22, 1979, the monument depicts a disintegrating body, symbolizing the sacrifice made for freedom. Nearby, a stone bears the names of the partisans who fell in the fight to liberate Pistoia.

Vinacciano

Rising on a hill of Montalbano, Vinacciano has ancient origins and was fortified in the Middle Ages. Conquered in 1318 by Castruccio Castracani, it played a strategic role in the conflicts between Pistoia and Lucca. After the capture of Pistoia in 1322, the Lucchese strengthened it and stationed a garrison there.

TAPPA 5

Belvedere Cross

The Belvedere Cross, 20 meters tall and located at 496 meters above sea level in the Montalbano hills within the municipality of Serravalle Pistoiese, was erected in the early 1900s to commemorate the Jubilee Year. It stands on the site of a former medieval fortress. The original wooden cross, which later collapsed, was replaced in 1928 by an iron one, blessed by Monsignor Chelucci. Restored in 1984, it marked its centenary in 2000 with a solemn ceremony. From here, the view stretches from the Valdinievole valley all the way to the sea.
