Gabella gate

The gate is the only preserved part of the ancient city walls in the lowest part of the castle, next to the New Fortress. Also known as Gate of Nievole, it allowed people coming from the homonymous valley to go into the medieval village by paying a tax, known as ‘gabelle’. The ancient customs house was built at the foot of the castle, in the village of Gabella Vecchia. Here some ancient inscriptions are on the wall of old houses.
